Dog Pregnancy Calculator

Enter the breeding date to estimate your dog’s due date and 58 to 68 day window.

If she mated on several days, try the first and the last date.

A dog is pregnant for about 63 days, or nine weeks, counted from mating. Add 63 days to the breeding date to get the likely due date. Normal births can happen from about day 58 to day 68, so plan for the whole window.

How to use the dog pregnancy calculator

  1. Enter the breeding date. This is the day the dogs mated.
  2. Leave the length on “Typical: 63 days from mating”. Choose “Custom value” only if your vet gave you a different number of days.
  3. Press Calculate due date.

The result shows the due date with the day of the week. It also shows how many days are left, the first and last day of the 58 to 68 day window, and a date for a vet check at day 28.

If your dog mated on more than one day, run the tool twice. Use the first date and then the last date. The real birth date will most likely sit between the two results, inside the wider window.

How the calculation works

The tool uses one rule: due date = breeding date + 63 days. This is the common canine gestation figure used by pet calculators and many vet guides.

Why is there a window? Mating does not always happen on the day of ovulation. Eggs mature for a few days before sperm can fertilize them. Sperm can also survive in the female for a time [CHECK: confirm sperm survival period with a vet source before adding a number]. So two dogs bred on the same day can give birth several days apart.

The tool counts days using calendar dates. It handles month ends and leap years.

Worked example

A dog is bred on 1 March 2025.

  • Day 28 check: 29 March 2025.
  • Window opens at day 58: 28 April 2025.
  • Expected due date at day 63: Saturday, 3 May 2025.
  • Window closes at day 68: 8 May 2025.

So the owner should have the whelping area and vet contact details ready by late April. Puppies arriving on 30 April or 6 May would still be within the normal range.

Reference table

Day after matingWhat it means
Day 28A vet may check for pregnancy by palpation if the mating date is known.
Day 58Earliest normal birth. Start watching closely.
Day 63The average due date.
Day 68Latest normal birth. Call your vet if there are no signs of labor by now [CHECK: confirm the vet advice on when to call after the due date].

Other facts you may see quoted: large dogs often have more puppies than small dogs [CHECK: litter size ranges by breed size]. Labor can last many hours [CHECK: typical labor length]. A drop in body temperature often comes before labor [CHECK: size of the temperature drop and when to start taking it].

Tips and common mistakes

  • Treating 63 days as exact. It is an average. Use the window.
  • Using the wrong date. Enter the mating date, not the date the heat started.
  • Skipping the vet. Palpation, ultrasound, hormone tests and X-ray can confirm pregnancy at the right stage. An ultrasound can also estimate the due date when the mating date is unknown.
  • Forgetting false pregnancy. Dogs can show pregnancy signs without being pregnant. Confirm with a vet.
  • Changing food or medicine without advice. Some drugs are not safe in pregnancy. Tell your vet that your dog may be pregnant. Ask how much extra food she needs [CHECK: feeding increase by stage].
  • Waiting too long to get help. Contact a vet at once for green discharge before the first puppy, strong contractions with no delivery, severe pain, weakness, collapse or fever.

FAQ

How long is a dog pregnant?

About 63 days, or roughly nine weeks, counted from mating. Normal births can fall anywhere from about day 58 to day 68.

How accurate is a dog due date calculator?

It gives a good estimate, not a guarantee. Mating day is not always the same as ovulation or fertilization day, so the real date can shift by several days. The 58 to 68 day window is the safer guide.

What if my dog mated on more than one day?

Use the first mating date for the main estimate and watch the whole window. You can also run the calculator with the last mating date to see the later end. Your vet can refine the date with an ultrasound.

When can a vet confirm a dog is pregnant?

If you know the mating date, a vet may check by palpation about 28 days after breeding. Ultrasound, hormone tests and X-ray are other options at the right stage. Ask your vet which fits your dog.

What if I do not know the mating date?

Ask your vet. An ultrasound can be used to estimate gestational age and a due date. You can then enter an estimated breeding date here to see the countdown.
